I read and have been told to cut above the 3rd node. Have you cut below that?

Just wondering

I don't cut any spikes back until they turn brown.

Who cuts them back in nature?

Unless you are growing show orchids or have an ailing plant, there is no need to cut spike.

As I've said any number of times:
Read all you can and then do what works for you

I don't mind experimenting, it's the way to learn.
I won't cut back any of my other spikes until I see what cutting this one back accomplishes. If the plant comes back with great blooms next time 'round...I'll know I made the right decision...for me
