What is a Dtps.? Male
Default What is a Dtps.?

I purchased the orchid below for about four bucks at a local big-box hardware store, thinking it was a Phal, as the main label indicated. But on closer examination, there was a second label that said "Dtps. Sogo Yenlin M-P0667". What does Dtps. stand for? And is this a Phal NOID, or something else?

Thanks in advance for answering this newbie's question.

Nope, not a noid.
Dtps. is Doritaenopsis. It is a cross with a Phaleanopsis and a Doritis.
Yours is very pretty and a great bargin.

No, this is no NOID.

It's a named variety. Don't throw the tag out.

The tag says:

Dtps Sogo Yenlin 'M-P0667'

As was mentioned Dtps is the abbreviation for Doritaenopsis. This is an intergeneric cross between the genus Phalaenopsis and the closely related genus Doritis.

Sogo Yenlin is the grex name. 'M-P0667' is a "numerical" place holder for what would probably be a registered cultivar name.

It's a man-made hybrid.

Just a note, but I was told by someone here on OB that Doritis has been reclasified as a Phal, therefore Doritinopsis has also been reclasified as being Phalaenopsis.

You still see loads of tags with them labled as Doritanopsis and I bought one which had one lable as Phalaenopsis and another tag as Doritanopsis.

It makes no difference to the fact that you have a properly named hybrid, just that it may also be correctly labled as a Phal.

Me, too! I saw it in Home Depot and thought, "Boy, that is pretty! Wait, $3.67!?!? How can I *not* buy this? And wait, there's this other one, too? Oh, man..."

And thus, my journey to orchid obsession began...

I had to resist buying the whole tray, but luckily for me, many of them were in pretty bad shape. Even though I'm quite new to orchids, I know enough not to buy plants with shriveled roots...

Thanks! I am a lousy photographer, but I'm learning. I have a fairly obsolete (now) Pentax Point-n-shoot, but as a result of my struggles to photograph my tropical fish and aquatic plants, I've learned enough to know which settings to tweak on the camera to get some passable shots. One day, if I can develop the discipline to stop buying plants, fish, and fish tanks, maybe I'll be able to afford a nice DSLR (I've been eyeing the Canon T1i).

Plus, it turns out it's a lot easier to shoot an immobile orchid than fish or plants underwater through glass!
