Question still trying to figure out what went wrong?

Hello,
Well I had bought 2 phals at lowes sale section.
I put them in a mix and I think the mix dried them out too much. So as a result they lost some roots.. one had buds when they were small the were green , when they got bigger then they were plumpy shiny green, then they started to dry up and then turned maroon, then one day after the next they shriveled up a bit and the stem that connects the bud turned pale brown and they fell off...

So disappointing but does anyone know what happened in regards to the color change and all?

Thanks for your input!!

Sounds like the roots got disturbed and abandoned the growth; not enough water can also cause them to wither (experienced that with a vandofinetia hybrid myself, grr). Maybe that's what happened with yours. Also with phals the buds can dry out when there's a change in environment: like bringing it from the store into your home.

Or from a owner who wants to make sure they are doing good and distubs them too much!! I think I finally learned not to mess with them after loosing that one

Well, it's a learningprocess for everyone You know next time that while the buds are forming you should keep the plant a bit moist and repotting while it's flowering isn't a good idea either (if you wanna see flowers that is!). Sometimes it is needed, though, seeing in what kind of stuff stores sell their phals in . I hope you'll get your plants to rebloom again!

It is indeed a learning process and everyone loses one at some point and not always due to thier care after bringing them home.

Dont blame yourself too much yet It could be that they were schocked during shipment and delevirey to the store even and had not yet blasted and lost roots.

I have often transplanted while they were in spike and have had little damage from it when its done very gently.

yeah now I am just wondering why the drastic color change from a bud that was bright green with light pink towards the ends to being dehydrated and maroon colored?

It doesn't take much to cause bud blast. A cold draft, change in humidity, change in temp, change in light. I've had Phals drop buds just moving them from one end of the house to the other. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's very common in newly purchased plants.

Not repotting might have caused more issues later. It depends on what media they were originally in and how much Lowes was or wasn't watering them. If they were on the sale table, then I wouldn't be surprised if many of the roots had already rotted away. The BBS are not known for having a clue as to how to take care of their plants.
