Replacement Phal - Orchid Board

After recently reducing my Mum's first Phal to a mass of roots and not much else I am following the advice I was given last weekend to replace it with another, and so thought I'd share it with you before I give it to her.

I think this one is a stunner, and even if I didn't love the flowers I think I'd have been lost on the leaves alone! It's in bark, although it looks desperate for a repot, and I can't decide whether to chance it or leave it alone! It looks pretty happy!

I think she'll love it!

That is a nice one. I have repotted before many times while in bloom without ill effect to it. Do you know this hybrid's name?

Hi Ted,
no - it didn't have a tag, which is the standard in garden centres here. I've yet to see one with a label! Fortunately Mum doesn't worry about things like that!

I've not had the best luck repotting while in bloom, although I still did my latest ones because I wanted to get them out of the very tight moss.

If it's in bark and it was mine, I would probably leave it till the blooms were over. The latest one I bought in bark needs repotting but I've decided to leave it for now.

Hi,
You found a great replacement for your Mum's plant. If in bark, I think I would leave it until it goes out of blossom. If it is in moss, at the very least, take it out of the pot and loosen up the moss. (gently)

By the way, your plant looks very much like Phal. schilleriana. You might want to do some research and comparison.

I'll take your advice and leave it be. It's (ok, who am I kidding, I got one for me too - they -

) are in bark, so I'll leave them alone for now!

Al - I've had a look at some of the previous threads on here as well as some on line, trying to track down which Phal with variagated leaves it most resembled, and I came to the same conclusion. While I can't find a pic that is exactly like this one I thought it was closer to the Phal. schilleriana.

Nicky, I'm fairly certain that I know what yours is, as I have the same one! It's called Phal Wiganiae (schilleriana X stuartiana). Mine was from GO Orchids, and the trade name for this one is Phal Philadelphia. What's the name of the supplier on the tag?

You're spot on Camille - there is a sticky label on the side of the plastic post that says Philadelphia - I saw it in the garden centre, but forgot about it till you mentioned it! I'm not seeing a supplier name, the label says:

Kleur:
Soort: Philadelphia
Partij: A220 etc

BTW - does yours have a scent??

Glad to have helped! From what I've researched, this one normally will have pretty much the best characteristics from each parent. They usual have a lot of blooms, some are slightly fragrant, and the roots might produce keikis like stuartiana is known to do. Multiple spikes are also frequent once the plant is well established in your growing conditions. Mine is starting a new spike right now!!

I don't know if mine is fragrant. A friend got it for me since I couldn't find it around here, and she kept it while it was in bloom and mailed it after the spikes were done.
