I was told that years ago people only did Phalaenopsis hybridizing with the big whites and pinks like you see in the grocery store. Then in the 50's and 60's people started breeding with these smaller Phals that don't put out as many flowers. Fewer flowers, but the ones you get are amazingly beautiful. At the time it was new and novel.... hence novelties. That's what I was told at least. :-)
