I'm new to the joy of Phalaenopsis and i recently won on ebay an auction for, what is labelled as, Phal Leopard Prince - i did some searching for information on this cross and most of the information is saying it's not a straight Phal but rather a Dtps. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? It looks like a typical Phal flower. Attached are some pictures...
Leopard Prince is still considered a Dtps. That said, I don't think that's what you have. It's supposed to be spotted, though from the many pictures I looked at can be highly variable.
Phal Leopard Prince has been hybridized so many times that it can look different.... not to mention clones! Here are some of my "Leopard Prince". All of these are labeled "Leopard Prince" and none were purchased from a Big Box Store where they are notorious for selling mislabeled orchids. The third pic is the "usual" presentation while the others are just "others", but all Leopard Prince. Sorry the pics are small but these are older pictures when I was saving in a smaller format.
I doubt it Dan, I think it probably is a Leopard Prince, just an unknown clone or cross. It's virtually impossible to ID a Phal. hybrid from a picture unless it's a very famous type.
You can't really tell a Dtps. vs. a Phal. by looks, in hybrids they are basically the same.
They're both used interchangably for various Phal. hybrids that have at least a little Doritis species in them. A few years ago the rule was technically if a hybrid has ANY Doritis in its background then its a Dtps. But these days i think everything is back to Phal.
