Wow your growing keikis like crazy

I myself have two basel keikis growing. That's a first for me.

Question for Al - your picture showed volcanic rock around the orchid is that what your orchid is potted in?

Yes, lava rock, it's in passive hydroponics.

Is it a Doritis? I'm thinking of that long stem, and the keikis forming low down.

Your mother plant looks healthy to me. How about painting the stem with some kind of rooting gel, see if you get roots higher up?

mehitabel, it's fast reacting. I have all my Phals (close to 90) on a screened patio in hot, humid weather now here in Fla. I applied the solution to every one of the stems, just about the time the flowers were ready to fall. The instructions say that chances of getting keikis vs. new blooms are greater if you wait till the blooms are done. Most of the spikes put out more growth regardless and grew more buds but more than half of those growths, blasted....due to the intense heat. Some have gone on to bloom but my intentions were to get keikis, not more blooming. So, some of the spikes have new growth and are also growing keikis. I have a few basal keikis growing as well but I'm not sure if it's from the solution (possibly) dripping on to the lower stem near the neck/base of the plant or if it occurred, naturally? In all, it took just a few days before the stems began to swell at the tips and up to a couple of weeks for some keikis to start growing. I would guess that the solution has worked 9 out of 10 times so far. I applied it to all the nodes (slightly peeled/pulled away from the stem with a toothpick)...one drop. I bought a .05 oz bottle ($22) but, I've used it on so many Phals, so many nodes and there's more than half a bottle left. It's been a fun, ongoing project.

Bingo, I got carried away, myself. I ended up buying a bunch of Phals on the sale rack at my favorite nursery just for the spikes!

It's P. Mini Mark 'Holm'. I think the 'stem' looks longer because I've pulled the rock back away from the new growths to allow for more air flow.

Oh, remember, no more Doritis, they are now phals.
