Default Phal labled as Anthura Gold but looks more like Baldans Kaleidoscope

Several months ago I saw a gorgeous Phal in my local garden center which was labled as Anthura Gold.

I commented to my husband that it looked really like one which was on my wishlist called Baldans Kaleidoscope.

They had a whole shelf full of them and I sooooo wanted one. But hubby and I were on a very tight buget and I resited.

Today I went in there and spotted that they had a few left on the discount table. This one had just one flower left, a new leaf starting to grow, and actively growing root tips visible and was only £5. I snapped it up.

I've just been looking at Anthura Gold online though and none of the pictures look anything like this. They are all more of a plain yellow. (Mine has deeper colour than the pic below seems to show, it looks more washed out in the pic than it really is).

I notice on the website of Anthura that they list Baldans Kaleidoscope and I think this looks far more like it than Anthura Gold.

Anthurium and Phalaenopsis young plants by Anthura B.V.

So I guess it's a NoID as it certainly isn't Anthura Gold But I don't really mind, it's close enough to Baldans Kaleidoscope for me, even it it's not really that.

None of Anthura's names are true. They are all just their "market" names. I really wish companies wouldn't do that, as they take registered hybrids and hide the real names!

There is one exception, and that is precisely Phal. Anthura Gold, but it was registered by McBeans with parents unknown - now how did they do that??? - so I'd bet it is not valid either.

I'm not saying this is yours but it is somewhat similar. The lip is different in that the base of the lip is yellow and yours doesn't appear to so. It may be near impossible to ID. the color on Baldan's K is much more intense even after several weeks and fading of the color.

I'm glad you were able to get the orchid you wanted at a good discount. The red-striped yellows are especially vibrant when they are new, and have been flowered in high light.

Baldan's Kaleidoscope flowers last a long, long time. Flowered in high light you do get the dark orangey color in the 2nd photo above. Flowered in lower light they are more yellow.

Then they start fading, fading, fading. Long before the flowers are dead they have become so faded they aren't even yellow any more, more like cream.

I don't think yours *is* Baldan's K, there are several other red-striped yellows floating around. But still lovely.

Thanks everyone.

Yes, mine's another NoID. I would have liked it to have a name but I love it anyway.

I will remember that about Anthura names in the future.

Doc, mine is more intense than it's come out in the pic, closer to your pic of Baldans, but I don't think it is that, the lip on mine has more yellow on the top.

I'm going to enjoy it as another NoID. A lot of my Phals are NoID anyway.
