Phalaenopsis 'Pink Twilight'

One of my first orchids was purchased in February 2003 and had a label hidden on the side of the pot.Phal. 'Pink Twilight' rebloomed for me twice a year (winter and summer) until this past July,when it commenced blooming and has been in bloom ever since. When the present blooms are entertaining me there are 2 or 3 little buds at the tip of the stem that are developing to bloom when the current flowers die.

Would it be of benefit to the plant if I cut the stem to stop the perpetual blooming?

Well,I haven't read anything about that kind of behavior and thought it was wearing itself out by not adhering to a regular blooming season and not taking a rest. The plant does look healthy with 12 inch long leaves.

I have recieved advice in the past to not cut it off, as the plant will put on a second spike if it wants to keep blooming. So its energetically less costly to let it keep blooming on its old spike than to force it to grow another spike. It will stop when its good a ready. I haven't really heard of orchids blooming themselves to death, except for one miniature species.

I have kept one in constant bloom for three years with no obvious negative affects. The only thing to hurt mine was hail (another story) so it now stays indoors and is in spike on a offshoot of the parent plant. The parent was slaughtered by hail going through the leaves! But this little shoot was developing and I saved it only to have it bloom again! This cross is a blooming fanatic! Enjoy it - keep it in bloom - and never fear, it won't die on you (if you keep it watered when dry and fertilized pretty regular.)

Thankyou for the advice.Now I feel better. It is a beautiful flower (better than the photo),and I didn't want to kill the best plant I have.

WOw, death by hail. What did that orchid do to God?
