Sandy, No subspike!! If I was better at posting pictures I would show you how the growth has developed. Anyway, the whole spike is about two inches long and I also have two leaves. There is another inch of spike and then the buds are forming at the end of this whole thing. I have never seen anything like it and since this is a relatively new plant to me, I don't know if it is some sort of wierd growth or if the plant just does it normally. I guess as long as I'm getting buds, I am happy!!

I will take it to my local os meeting, though. One of our members is an AOS judge and he might have seen something like this... Do you have any buds developing on yours yet? Did your growth start out as a big bulging mass of plant tissue?

Not quite sure what you're asking, Mspatt? This Phal grew normally and has been blooming for the last couple of weeks. The bloom is pic & post #1. No abnormalities noted except for these leaves.

Sandy, There is no sub-spike. The entire spike is only a bit over two inches now. About a half an inch up the spike I have the first leaf. Another half an inch and I have the second leaf. The spike grows for an inch or so and then starts to form buds. (Sorry, I'm working on posting pictures.) I have a fair number of phals, but I have never seen anything like this...

I am going to ask about it at our next os meeting. One of our members is an AOS judge and I'm hoping he has seen something of this type. I have only had this particular plant for about a month and so I don't know if it is some mutation, just an extension of the bract as noted, or if it is strange, but normal. It reminds me of the spikes on a few others I have... Do you have buds on yours yet? Did the growth start out as a blob? Just a round mass of plant tissue that really didn't look like a spike?

This one has begun blooming and no, the spike grew normally and is now, close to 18". I've already posted this pic but, here it is again.

When you can, post a pic of yours. It sounds similar and interesting, the way you've described it.

Hi,
I believe what you have on the phal. are called floriferous growths.
I had it happen to a plant I used KeikiPro on.
Do you use Superthrive?

They don't seem to do any harm and the spike went on to bloom as usual.
