That is a very good question: Just how much to what volume of water? In the States, it should be available at BBS as well as drugstores.

Camille I went to the Babelfish translation site and this is what it says:
French- sels d'epsom
Dutch- epsom zouten
These translation sites are never perfect so don't know how useful this will be. Carol

Thanks.
The problem is not about the names. I asked both for 'sels d'epsom' and 'sulfate de magnesie' but everyone looks clueless. The pharmacist has heard of it, but doesn't have it. I think I'm going to see with my university if it's possible to order it from a lab supply catalogue.

Camille, it seems difficult to find some Epsom salt in France indeed...
You can find some online on this site (probably on many others) : Sels d'Epsom simples

A good source for Magnesium Sulphate here in Canada is any hydroponic supplier. It also costs much less than buying epsom salts in a pharmacy.

Here Epsom Salts can be found in the bath section at any grocery. It's often used in the bath water as an aid to healthy skin. I buy it by the wax gallon container which lasts forever! (used on plants and not by the cup full in the tub!)
It has long been used by garderners to aid in bigger, more colorful and lush blooms. A 2" deep trench is dug around the plant/shrub at the drip line. A bit of ES is sprinkled in the trench and then covered. A once a season application does the trick!

1 tspn per gallon.

When I worked in a classroom, we were always looking for ideas for crafts to do with the kids. This one was good for Christmas or Mother's Day. Add a little glycerin and food coloring to epsom salts. Wrap in colored cellophane and tie with a bow, or put in a pretty glass jar. Depends on budget for crafts. I always wondered what epsom salts really were. Now I know. The kids were giving mum some fertilizer!
