Default Good phal. Vendor in Hawaii?

I'm headed to Oahu and the Big Island in about a week. Are there any vendors that would be worth visiting that specialize in phalaenopsis? I'd be interested in both species and interesting hybrids.

I already have H&R, Orchids and Fire, and Carmela Orchids on my list to visit.

Thanks!

- Tom

I would second Carmela's. I have heard people comment that the phals they bought from them in the winter were all large and in spike. Plus they have such over all good relations with their customers.

There is also Atkatsuka Orchids on the Big Island in Volcano. Carmela's prices are better but the facilities aren't as glitzy as Atkatsuka. They're both worth a visit IMO. I actually don't recall seeing a lot of Phals at either place. Mostly Catts and Vandas. I've ordered plants from H&R and been very happy with them, but not been to their greenhouse. Steve (Isirus) has though. Maybe he'll chime in. This website may help.

Many years ago, I went to Richella Orchids, owned by Richard and Stella Mizuta. Go google their website. It was, for me, phalaenopsis heaven.

I bought two compots (community pots, if you are a beginner) which gave me 17 plants altogether, which I put into small pots filled with boiled pieces of asplenium nidus fern root. That's to kill at the germs on the root.

The plants bloomed the year after. Large whites, overlapping, good substance, and probably polyploids.

If I go again, I might check in at Carmela's to see what they are like.

Hey, I googled and found a list of orchid growers in all states. You can find a whole bunch of growers in Hawaii in Section X

While I dont know much about Phal vendors in Hawaii, you should also check out Kawamoto Orchids Orchids - KawamotoOrchids.com - Honolulu, Hawaii when you are on Oahu. Their greenhouses are not as immacualte as H&R but they do have a lot of really cool species orchids. You should talk to one of the guys that works the 'visitor' area and they will point you in the right direction and let you wander. Its great! I also agree with Terri (Quiltergal) on the Akatsuka tip. Mostly hybrids but its right next to Volcano National Park and as a former resident of the Big Island (Im now on Oahu unfortunately) you absolutely MUST visit Kilauea Volcano and you MUST check out Akatsuka for the sheer 'glitz' of their visitor section! Very cool. As for Phal vendors on the BI, Im not too sure who has 'em as Im not a Phal guy. PM if you want some names of interesting species places. I know a few but not toooooo many.

I'm leaving for Kauai in 3 days! I can hardly wait. Where's the hula dancer icon? I hope to find a couple of greenhouses to visit while I'm there. I must carry on the tradition of a plant carry on.

There are two growers on Kauai that Im aware of. One is Hawaiian Orchid Source Hawaiian Orchid Source and the other is I thought was called something to the effect of Kauai Orchids but I can no longer find their web address. Ive talked to the owner of Hawaiian Orchid Source at a show before and I got some Fdk After Dark from him. He's pretty knowledable on Catasetinae and is friends with Fred Clarke. I think think their other specialties are Tolumnias and Neofinetia hybrids....if I recall correctly. Anyway, when you are there you should definitely check out the Na Pali Coast on a evening or day cruise (you should see some whales too!) and check out Waimea Canyoun, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

Thanks for the info Steve. I just finished printing boarding passes. We went to Kauai about 15 years ago so I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since then. We plan to do a whale watch cruise and I hope to also do quite a bit of snorkeling. I know that Tunnels on the north shore will be out of the question, but Lawai Cove should still be OK. My Sis has never been, so it should be fun. Need to try and find Duane's Ono Burger again! Those were good!!!

Tolumnias would be perfect carry ons! I would really like to find a Hwr. Lava Burst 'Puanani' also.

Mahalo!
