got this phal on sale at a store (they were about to throw it out) and it looked like they hadn't opened all the way and the plant was bone-dry (of course..) so i took it home and watered and repotted him, but the blooms never opened..what's up..?!?!

There may be nothing wrong with the plant as long as the leaves are firm and the roots are not rotted out. It may be the way the plant was handled or where it was growing in the store....just some thoughts

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but maybe it's peloric? I've never seen a peloric phal before, so I may be wrong.

I think Camille might be right. In extreme cases of peloria the flower looks like that. It's hard to say for sure from the picture.

I'm sorry but what does peloria mean? I checked the glossary to no avail

The petals of the flower mimic the lip. Here is a picture a peloric Phal that I have.

Once peloric, always peloric. All blooms on this plant will continue with this genetic quirk. I happen to really like these, just because it adds interest to the overall look of the flower.

Enjoy yours. All plants are distinguishable in one way or the other; this is just the 'other'

Here's mine:

Mine looks exactly like Sandy's does. It's just the way it is. Mine is the longest blooming of all my phals. It's actually quite pretty when you stop thinking that is should be open more, like I was doing. You'll grow to like it, as I did mine. It's very different, for sure. Not peloric, though, as several experts have told me.

it's not always true that peloric phals (especially hybrids) will bloom peloric the next time. There are some that will revert back to normal blooming
