Default Doritaenopsis Purple Martin - First bloom

finally... I bought this as a seedling a bit more than a year ago. Yesterday it open the first bloom...

weird: yesterday, it was quite dark (closer to the colour of the lip)... today, it is lighter... is this normal, that a flower change the colour so quickly?

for being its first time, I will not complain... but I really hope it gets better next time

It's really nice Ramon and I admire your patience with it! I've been meaning to get one for quite a while, but never actually got around to seeing where it's available! That sounds strange that it changed color so quickly. I think I would have prefered the darker version of it.

Oh, and what's the plant in the background of the first pic? It' very fuzzy, but it looks like a variegated phal?? I love variegated plants!

I bought mine as a seedling too, last November from Big Leaf Orchids. It's just now in bud for the first time. I'll take photos when it blooms and we can see how they compare.

Be very interested to see the color and if it changes so quickly as yours has.

Ramon, mine has been in bloom a little more than a month now and it's still kicking out flowers. The flowers on mine do fade as they age also, but not as quickly as a day. Here is a pic of mine when it first opened. The first flower is noticably lighter in color than the newer one. The petals also recurve which I don't like so much. I see yours do the same. I wonder if it's a genetic or cultural thing?

Gwen I think you and I bought ours from Big Leaf about the same time. That's when we got the freebie.

Ok, I assume that the plant needed some experience on what to do with the flowers. The first bloom, as I posted before, lost part of its colour within 24h. The second bloom is opend since 3 days, and is still quite dark

it should keep learning, and make darker flowers in the future

They are ALL so adorable!

I'm wondering what lighting differences the three of you have to produce such varying shades of color

Gwen, yours seems to be very dark!

I love them all...and of course, it's now on the list!

Yep, it's quite dark and I wish it would remain just as it is, but it JUST bloomed last night, so I am betting it's going to lighten up a lot today.

I really love this one. . .and it's SMALL!

Edited to respond to your question about lighting:

I think mine is growing under too much light actually. . .the leaves are on the pale side of medium green. I am growing it under T5 lights but off to the side. I'll be reducing the light.
