I'm too far away or I would be parked on their doorstep waiting for the throw-a-ways. What a sad thing. I may have nightmares tonight.
You should open up an orchid orphanage....poor little things.
yes Really Holly! I would totally give an orphan NoId phal a good home here in sunny CA...

That pic (the avatar) has circulated on the net for a while now. Supposedly the guy had too much free time, and too much alcohol in his system. The helmut is a lime and his cat unbelievable patient. If the cat had later murdered him in his sleep, there's not a jury that would have convicted the poor feline.

For people who like phals, check out hotels in your area and see if they regularly pitch em once they drop the blooms. You could have an endless supply!

I picked up 3 today, one even has a bud that has yet to open.
It makes me think someone should set up a business RENTING flowering Phals to hotels. When they stop flowering you switch them out for others which are in flower. The hotel gets the old ones back when they are back in flower again. It's probably cheeper for the hotels to just keep buying new ones though.

Some of the game lodges here in SA buy Cymbidiums in flower for their rooms and then toss them into the garbage when they have finished flowering . They claim it works out a lot cheaper than buying cut flowers !! But what an awful WASTE!!!!

Rosie, here in the US there are a few businesses that do that. But you're right it's cheaper to toss them and buy new ones. Hotels and big box stores are keeping the mega conglomerates flooding the market with cheap NOIDS in business.

How sad.... my phals grows really really slow to adulthood. Wish I could bring some to backyard but it would be kind of impossible since I no longer live around Chicago, across the Pacific to be precise.
