Hey, jkelee. If you broke off the last 1", IMO, all you've done is delay the flowering a little.
Phal spikes usually have at least two to three undeveloped nodes below the place where buds begin, and when the tip is damaged, the nodes below will develop. Just the same as if you cut the tip off a tree or other plant-- branches below.
Foidermoah, sometimes the little dears are as obstinate as preschoolers after cookes: they just throw another spike! In my experience breaking spikes, a sturdy phal that wants to bloom doesn't tolerate hindrances. They just go over, around, under or right thru!
Another reason to love them. Not to try to diminish the pain, of course
