Anyone growing Phal. wilsonii? - Orchid Board

I just acquired one of these, but am wondering if anyone is growing any currently... Mine is mounted and a seedling (though the only one that I have ever seen was mostly roots and very few leaves)--but I am truly curious as to how cool tolerant this little guy is. I see that it is from the mountains in Yunnan, which should put it on par with many of the Pleione sp. or Neofinetias for winter temps, but I'm curious if any of you have first hand experience.

I picked it up this last March at an orchid show. I've got it outdoors under shade cloth and the coldest that its been exposed to was 42F. It had 2 tiny leaves when I purchased it and it promptly dropped one of them. Perhaps a month ago it started putting out a new leaf and the other day I noticed a new root. When things warmed up I watered every evening but it's dry for most of the day and would probably appreciate more moisture.

I bought a plant from Andy's Orchids last Fall I think, and though I haven't been growing my plant very well (too busy and all that), Harry told me that they have all of their chinese phals out in a greenhouse that just has a roof with some shade (maybe not much) and no sides. It doesn't get overhead weather but will get in the high 80'sF during the day, and then it can get quite cool at night. They water every evening and their plants grow like crazy. If you find a culture sheet for phal wilsonii you'll see that they can take temperatures at freezing and have snow on them and their flowers with no ill-effects. I think they key is a big temperature swing, decent light and when it is warm give them lots of water (but not sitting in soggy media) that drains off and doesn't keep the plant itself too wet. I don't remember how humid it is in their part of california, but it you were to splash the roots on the bottom of the mount in the morning I'm sure that wouldn't hurt anything

I have had one for a little over a year now, made the mistake of prying him off his mount to put on another mount and it sulked a lot. It's now been on a terra cotta wine bottle holder for about 4 months which is filled with water. It's started about 10 new roots and grown 2 leaves since moved from a temp tree fern mount to the terra cotta 'swamp log' and seems to appreciate the increase in available moisture. It's growing in intermediate temps right now too, but plan to move it outside, where it is cold-intermediate year round, once established on the new mount.

I have a p. taenialis that has been outside for over a year now and gave me 4 or 5 blooms last may and does not mind the cold, yet grows gangbuster on me once day temps get over 75 and night temps dont drop below 50.

thanks for the advice all; mine is on cork and putting out new roots...we'll see how she does this winter in the GH with the cymbidiums.
