White Phal ID please?
This is my first post here and I would like to first say HI!
I was hoping that someone could give me the scientific name for this orchid?
I rescued it from the Lowes store and it now has come back to life, is in bloom and has a new leaf peeking out.
I would appreciate it if I knew it's name.
Thank you,
Christine

I don't even have a guess, but I can tell you that there are so many Phal hybrids that it may be impossible to pin down the exact scientific name, especially with a white phal. It is very pretty though, and does deserve a name. I think something like 'Morning sunrise' would suit it well if you don't get a good guess at the scientific name. You can always think of any name you like instead though too!

JennS,
Thank you for the quick reply. I do agree there are many hybrid white phals and it could be hard to find out it's true name. I'll wait to see if anyone recognizes it and if all else fails, I'm going to name it "Morning Sunrise" as you suggested!
I entered the picture in the 2009 calender contest and they asked for the scientific name of the orchid, which I don't know. They told me to post the pic on the forum to see if someone could ID it.
Thanks again for the name suggestion! I really like it.

Glad you liked it. It may sound a little silly to some, but they all deserve a name, whether the correct name or a given name. I just thought it looked like that with the yellow and reddish/pink. I think it is very pretty! Good luck in the contest. I was just thinking about entering it too, but my pics are nothing compared to everyone elses! Good luck on finding out the name too!

Oh, and I forgot to say welcome to the board! There is an introductions section too, where you can introduce yourself and say hello! Great to have you here.

Hi Intrepida,
I'm afraid it will be next to impossible to name your phal. If someone here on the board happens to have one exactly like it and knows its name then you're in luck, but it is a long shot.
It's a great photo tho. Hope to see more of your plants.

Well I'm very new to orchids but isn't that a moth orchid? I have one which has identical blossoms. Don't remember the scientific name for it though :P

Hi Viia
It is a Phalaenopsis, which is commonly known as the "moth orchid".
Hi Christine
You've got a lovely Phal there. Unfortunately, with so many hybrids being made all the time, it will probably be impossible to ID..Doesn't matter though because the calendar contest rulles now allow for NOID orchids, which stands for NO ID...clever, right?
Just enter it as Phal NOID 'Morning Sunshine' if you'd like.
Good luck to you

Glad I could be of help! I am usually way off base with things like that. Good luck in the contest!
