Hey there Roly,

Have you found any local grower that sells phal. gigantea? Thanks!!

P.S. Baldan's is going to have a MAJOR sale in October!!! Keep an eye out!! I just went there and bought some really really nice new hybrids and some of their old ones for a steal, as she is trying to clear out their inventory. I got a phal. barbara baldan's that is in an 8" pot for $45 bucks. The thing is sooooooooooo huge, I'm afraid of it. LOL>

sorry to hijack your thread.

I don't know exactly when in October but she mentioned that they have this Redlands orchid tour (like the one they have in April) in October as well. So she said that this is when she's going to have the sale. She said she would advertise on a couple of sites. But, I went down there today and she gave me and my sister deep discounts on what she's got. But, she's going to discount things more in October.

It may be worth it to go now. I got 4 phals (which were allllllllllllllllll huge) for 95.00. They are also going to be discontinuing some of their hybrids so I got the Venetian Peach, which she said they won't get back.

The barbara baldan's that I bought was originally 75.00 and I got it for 45. Like I said, the thing is ENORMOUS.

Thanks for letting us know peeweelovesbooks, this would be a good subject for a new thread. Anyone close by that would like to act as middle man now while the selection is at its best? Oh, we need of your new treasures.

Roly, Mr. Lin's site re: P. gigantea says to be very careful about water between the leaves. I looked at my plant closely yesterday and the leaves are much closer together than a reg phal. I can see where water could be trapped between them and cause problems. Glad I mounted mine! If I can get it through the winter (really to cool for it) I think I'll have it made!

Al if I do get it it would be mounted and I would water it early morning so as to give time for the water to evaporate by nightfall. And I'm pretty sure that that'll happen due to the high temperatures down here. Thank you for the advise though

I figured you would be researching this future purchase pretty throughly since this plant is not going to be cheap. Just wanted to give you a head's up about the watering, especially since you have so much humidity to deal with and evaporation must be slow.

Now, where are you going to find one? You must have some place in mind, have you seen small one's at the nursery you visited on the 4th?

Al this nursery is not big on Phals; their main focus is Cattleyas and just a few Dendrobiums but other than that. I believe I've seen the plant at Orchidweb. The same place where I got my Phal. equestris and my Phal. bellina

Yes, they do have it available and it's not so cheap but I think that I can afford the one in the 4 inch pot. Orchids and Orchid Supplies
