Question Phal. schilleriana mounting questions

Today I received a Phal. schilleriana from a seller I have done business with in the past. It is supposed to be NBS in a 2.5" pot with a 6" leaf span. The plant is healthy and survived shipping just fine. In doing more reading, the leaves will apparently get much larger. I thought this might be a smaller variety, but I guess not. I am wanting to mount this Phal while still small. The pics I saw on the 'net appeared that the plant was mounted either upside down ot horizonally. Is this correct? I have a good sized cypress knee to use and wondered if anyone has any suggestions. I have sucesfully mounted other orchids. I also have several cedar shakes I could cut down to mount on. Help please........Gregg

Hi Gregg,
Upside down is really right side up for phals.
The leaves should be pointed down and the roots up.
My P. schilleriana is mounted on cork with a bit of sphag moss.
The leaves on P. schilleriana can get up to 16" long so I used a piece of medium sized cork. When and if my plant reaches that larger size I'll move it to a larger piece of cork. Your cypress knee should work just fine and would look more natural than a cedar shake.
Hope this helps and would love to see a picture when you have it done.
Regards,
Al

Upside down or sideways is the best way to mount Phals...it removes the possibility of water settling in the crown

Please post pics when you've done it
