It might be. I think ripening fruit would give off more methane than peppers, but it's a possibility. Perhaps methane combined with lethal pepper fumes did it!

I can't help with an answer only tell you that I have a species phal that the first three buds on the spike blasted. The fourth is now a day or so away from opening. Same thing as yours, no change in anything as far as placement, watering, temp, etc. I don't have anything *ripening* tho......

I have only a few phals and until recently struggled to flower them ,due to the cool conditions we have here in winter .Without fail the buds would turn yellow and drop off . A friend suggested I repot them into styrafoam pots and mist them with water containing a trace of seaweed fertilizer or a flower booster , the waters temperature is important ,and it should be at around 20 degrees centigrade. So , not holding out much hope ,I did as he said for one plant And it has flowered!! And carried the flowers for nearly two months . I am now going to try this with the others.

The pepper could be it. Peppers ARE fruit, and will produce ethylene gas, a ripening catalyst.

Yay! at least it flowered!!
--too bad its hard to grow phals where you live, I love all orchids, but many don't bloom that long, so I use phals to tide me over until the other orchids are in bloom.
Thanks for the tip! Hope you can flower phals now

I moved the pepper plant, and the bud was only beginning to look slightly orange/pinkish. Do you think I moved it in time for the other 7 buds to fully develop?

Only time will tell.
Ethylene doesn't necessarily ruin flowers or blast buds, it just speeds up the aging. In fruits, it increases action of enzymes that make the fruit sweet and soft (ripe).
