does taping them harm them at all? How long does it take?

Taping doesn't hurt them, it actually keeps them from splitting further. I only tape the back side. It never grows back together, it just allows the leaf to continue with photosynthesis until it dies off. Most orchids grow leaves very slowly and keep them for a long time. I always try to repair them instead of removing them.

Default Injured Phal is recovered!

Hello Susiep,

I wanted to send an update on this plant. It is currently in bloom and healthy! I am attaching a picture below:

You can clearly see its masking tape "band-aid" still on the leaf. Actually, more than 15 months since its original accident, the leaf is still alive and otherwise healthy. Thanks again for the tip!

Very cool, John! Glad to share that tip with you. I have repair tape on my psychopsis that has been there for about 15 months too! I use the clear packing tape and you can't even see it.
