Phal Culture in Houston

This was my thought as well, but in my execution, not so much. They did well the first year. But, pretty much as soon as I had to repot them (without a horse manure source) things went downhill.

Houston really only has a few weeks of "winter." So, they definitely stay outside for a much larger portion of the year. I'll be more cognizant of the nighttime lows in the months adjacent to those weeks.

I've already increased their fertilizer. Hopefully, this combo helps! I'll let you know when sufficient time has passed for me to be able to tell.

we have lots of successful phal growers at the Houston Orchid Society. It's a nice bunch of mostly older peoples like myself.

As roots grow, the "tailor" themselves on a cellular level to function optimally in that environment, and once they have grown, cannot change. Move those into a different environment and they are immediately sub-optimal and will start to fail. I dare say that manure to almost anything else is a drastic change.

You'd be better off using a stimulant than a fertilizer.
