Repairing frost damaged Phal.
Default Repairing frost damaged Phal.

Greetings lovely, helpful Orchard Board members!!! I think I need to campaign for the official Patron Saint of Misfit Phals. or something because I've obsessed with rescueing those I come across on the markdown table at my job (I work at a grocery store)!! I bought this poor little girl yesterday and she really needs some help. It's actually 3 spikes, about 20" each. They're each in full bloom, just stunning. However, our florist said they were shipped ice cold. Some, not all, of the leaves are pretty much destroyed and the roots sticking out of the top of the pot are, needless to say, grey and shriveled. There are a couple of leaves that managed to escape damage and are nice & healthly looking. A couple of the buds obviously have "blasted" and I don't expect to save them. But as I mentioned, the blooms that she has are plump & gorgeous. Am I fighting a losing battle here? What's the safest way to repot-I want to split them up into 3 separate containers. Is it safe to cut off the dead leaves and dead roots? What sort of care should I give them after I repot?

Everyone on this board is always sooooo helpful and kind. Maybe if we could get world leaders to all just grow orchids there would truly be peace in the world!!!!
Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Are there 3 separate plants in the pot? If so, you can separate and repot individually if you like. I would cut the spike(s) off and stick it in a vase of water. If they are still viable they will continue to open. If the damaged leaves are squishy I would remove them. If you leave them on you run the risk of rot. A picture would be helpful.

Yes, it's three individual spikes. I like the idea of cutting the spikes and putting them in water. How far down from the flowers/buds should I cut? The flowers take up the top 8-10" of each spike.
Sorry I can't post a pic because I spend so much time w/my orchids now my 'puter has been sadly neglected and my photo software has rebelled and shut down on me!!!!! (time to haunt some tech boards now I guess)

Thanks so much for all the great info.
