1st rebloom on a mystery yellow phal

My dad's been growing phals forever, but apparently could never get this one to rebloom - couldn't even remember the color. A while after I started growing, he gave it me - see if you can do something with it or compost! Happy to report that after 7 months of grow lights and diligent watering, it put up a spike and I have 7 and counting buttery yellow blooms.

While I have your eyes, it does have one bottom leaf that has dried up and will eventually fall off - I think it's just old leaves given how many happy new roots this is producing. But I've included a pic in case someone else looks at it and diagnoses a problem.

Looks very happy. There’s nothing I’d be worried about. I’ve noticed a few of mine will loose the oldest leaf after a flush of new roots grow, and I suspect that in many cases it’s partly to do with how many roots have grown through the area where the leaf connects to the stem.

Beautiful! I suspect the grow lights had a lot to do with it. It's hard to give Phals the duration of light that they want (like 12 hours a day) with only natural light unless you live in the tropics. They'll grow with less but tend to not bloom.

That was worth waiting for! Nice job on getting it to bloom. I learned that the addition of supplemental lighting, even in a room that I thought was getting plenty of natural light, made a big difference in reblooming for me.

I have no idea, likely 3-5 years ago. It's in 4" terra cotta and only has one root coming out bottom, so I've been inclined to leave alone.

Few media last more than 2-3 years in good shape. After it finishes flowering I suggest you repot it. In the mean time glance over a sticky thread here. From the left yellow menu choose Forums then Beginners. Near to top is The Phal abuse stops here.
