Germaine Vincent
ok ob,
so yeah, that whole dang time you put up with the bloom show, and nobody told me that the cross was this germaine vincent?! or maybe someone did and i forgot??!
anyways, my question is, since our plant is the alba x coffee version of the, apparently, original germaine vincent cross, is our plant also technically one of those or is it another unregistered hybrid? what’s the rule on this? thanks for any input!

Varieties and cultivars don’t count in the hybrid names.
If both parents of a cross are Germaine Vincent, its offspring are still Germaine Vincent.

It's a fair point that tmoney raises though, lets say you have two growers that recreate the germain vincent then and the one grower uses exceptional clones and the other grower uses any odd shaped ones.
Both will sell their seedlings as the same but a buyer would never know the difference from the name alone.

You can have different varieties, just like species.
If both parent were alba and the offspring were alba, you'd have Phalaenopsis Germaine Vincent var alba.
Regarding exceptional vs average parents, well, that's also part of the game.
Nothing prevents you from giving a name to your breeding line and clones that come from it.
Phal Sweet Memory will always be Sweet Memory, but you have Sweet Memory 'Liodoro', Sweet Memory 'Dream', Sweet Memory 'Perfume'.

That is absolutely correct, which is why this is always a caveat emptor buying situation.
Hopefully, your first grower states Germain Vincent ('A-OK' FCC/RHS x 'Our Best' AM/AOS) or the like, so you at least know the chances of a quality offspring are increased.

hahah, no, but i figured at least someone more knowledgeable might have recognized the cross as the hybrid name germaine vincent seems to come up a lot when im reading. the parents were posted in the op and that’s what the tag says as it was sold to us. i suppose it’s up to the grower to decide if they want to sell it labeled as the hybrid name or if they want to show parents names? that’s basically what you are saying ray?
anyway, TIL that violacea x speciosa is a germaine vincent! hahaha

ah right the tag explains things.
I have an unofficial Phal Bear King at mine.
It's a dragon tree eagle crossed with hannover passion which theoretically is a bear king but I dunno it's not as good as some of the pictures or even some of the specific bear king clones so I consider that one my Bear King replica.
To me the actual flower shape and color is more important than the name. Not all turn out perfect, the growers showing perfect ones usually don't show the many they don't keep or got lucky getting a good one.
It's specifically with violace crosses I'm thinking of, some of the shapes are not always perfect in the crosses.

Maybe it's an older plant and the tag was printed before it was named. Or maybe the grower who ordered the tags didn't know it was named.

yes, this is possible for sure. seemingly tho, the hybrid (I thought) was fairly well known, and the grower is one of the largest and most established in mainland europe. it made me wonder because the plant isn’t more than 2-3, and like they wanted to just show the actual parents. so that made me think they wanted to not market it as a germaine vincent, or that it wasn’t (according to the “rules”) the same cross.
these technicalities are where i just throw my hands up and go stare at the flowers
