the same shop sold me my bear king and when I asked for a bear king they said they had none in stock so I said it's the cross I mentioned in previous post and he says ah ok yes we have that one.

what really confused me one time was when they were selling a phal bellina alba and a phal bellina var alba at the same time.

I asked experienced growers at the time which I should buy and nobody had a clue what the difference was.

I've asked the "shop" about different crosses over the years but their answer is usually the same, that's the name it arrived with...

yeah, i guess this is one of the drawbacks of dealing with a large wholesaler type nursery compared to a mom and pop place. probably different employees entering names into systems at different time and just putting in a lot of names and numbers to get through large shipments. i have noticed that as well with this company, but usually it’s becuase i didn’t look well enough and they have mature vs. young plants that are generally at two different price points. learned that one the hard way when we got lots of tiny plants in our first orders. but they were cheap!!

Maybe it's because hybrids that I get (mostly from society plant tables...my purchases are nearly all species) come from growers (hybridizers) I very often get plants that have just the parents, when I look them up frequently they have gotten named (registered) I just add that info to the tag. It can take some years for a seedling to bloom, so the parents (including cultivars... can influence what will be produced) are known when the tag is produced, the name comes later (if it is worth registering... many are pretty more or less, but not extraordinary)

And if a cross that has been done before, gets remade...with same or different parents... it may or may not be worthy of getting its own cultivar name and being cloned. Of course, cultivar names aren't registered unless the plant is awardd, so the cultivar name has no lasting meaning at all. If you have a plant that you want to put your grandmother's name on as a cultivar, go right ahead. It'll make Grandma happy.

so, let's play this out then. suppose we won an award for this particular plant (no intention, let's just pretend). then if we registered it, would we need to register it as germaine vincent "tmoneys grammy", or just phalaenopsis tmoneys grammy without the germain vincent hybrid designation?

The hybrid has been named, the name stays. If you get an award, you get to name this specific plant, hence 'cultivar' or 'clonal' name; it only applieds to that plant.


It would be Phalaenopsis Germaine Vincent "Clonal Name"

You would not "register" it at all - the cross is already registered as Germaine Vincent. What you would do it give it the 'tmoney's grammy' cultivar epithet (in single quotes) and the awarding organization would "record" the award of that particular cultivar.
