sounds about right. It could smell like too much "cheap" airfreshener was used around it.
But that is my niggle with most P. violacea's too. They are very similar to Bellina's but just a sort of cheap knockoff, I have since discovered that the sap flowers produce all taste different too.
The sap that bellina's produce is the best sap out there.
On some of my non fragrant cattleya's the flower sap tastes like nothing, on the fragrant ones, they have flavor.
So yeah lets knock this thread a bit more off topic with that little tidbit and my nr 1 recommendation. if you get a p Bellina to flower, don't just smell it, taste the flower sap. It's better than honey.
