Hi all!

I just started keeping orchids and have really caught the bug. I bought an unlabeled chia E. Yenlin from the grocery store and theres alot of things about this hybrid that I really like. If anyone wants to share some suggestions about what varieties I get next I would really appreciate it!

I'm looking for small varieties of Phals that fit nicely on a windowsill, particularly if they are also hardy and likely to produce multiple spikes.

Hi Rosie! Welcome!

I'm also a windowsill-phal-grower, so I'm excited to have someone else along on this compact-phal adventure!

You've got an impressive grocery store that stocks fancy hybrids! Yay! If you're looking for more similar ones (compact size, multiple spikes, blooms more than once a year), I've found that the specialist OrchidPhile has a lot of these. They do mail-order from their CT greenhouse. I just picked up some lovely varieties including a Chia E. Yenlin. Also, I've got my eyes open for a Phal. Jiaho's Pink Girl which Hausermann's has in stock right now. Good luck in your search!

Thanks for the tip! Yeah that CEY was like, the perfect first orchid. I think the giant Phal that pervades most grocery/hardware/whatever stores people usually buy their first orchid at isnt necessarily the best plant for the first time at home orchid grower. They are beautiful but a lot of people dont have space for such a giant plant! Also, one of the things I was first struck by when I saw the CEY at the store was how vigorous and happy it looked and I have continually been impressed with its vigor. I'm not sure if this bears out but it's my understanding that hybrids are often more hardy than non hybrids so I think it would be great to see more of these kinds of orchids in first-orchid buying situations.

PS that Pink Girl is gorgeous!

People keep linking to Hausermann's website, and I keep ending up with a cart full of plants In fact, I've got an order I'm expecting to arrive this week lol

I did it to myself today! My recent order from Hausermann (which I placed nearly 3 weeks ago) arrived today, but I had been eying that phal that I suggested to Rosie since I noticed it about two days after I placed my last order, so I just bought that and another phal that I had been admiring for a while! Oops!

Good news is that they are all such small plants that I'll be able to find room SOMEWHERE on my orchid shelves. :-P
