LED lights for Wardian Case? Female
Default LED lights for Wardian Case?

Hello Everyone!

For Christmas I was gifted two lovely Wardian cases. Each Wardian case is meant to be placed on a table top. The first one is about a foot in length and a foot tall. The second one is about a foot in length and two feet tall.

I already have all of my window space taken up by my orchids, so these cases will not be sitting by a window. The Wardian cases will be placed side by side and ideally powered by one light source. I plan on placing miniature orchids and 1 or 2 regular/compact sized orchids in these Wardian cases. That being said, I will obviously need some artificial lighting to help my orchids grow.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for LED lights. I found two on Amazon, but I'm not sure if they're too powerful/not powerful enough. The first light is meant for architects and has a large 32 inch lED light bar that is powered by 15W. I do have doubts that this is powerful enough as I have an exo-terra nano (8inx8inx12 in) that is powered by a 13W LED. The second option is a dual gooseneck LED grow light that is 45 W. I wonder if the 45W would be too powerful. Does anyone have any input?

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! I'm looking for a LED light that is full spectrum white (I do not want the red/blue lights for my living space).

Thanks!

I don't have any lighted terraria now, but... If you page through threads in this forum on growing under lights, you will find specific recommendations people have made in the last few months. Not many people use the pink/blue lights any longer; white LEDs can be sufficient.

You have two things working against you:

1) You must light an area 1' x 2' (probably a bit more)
2) You want to light them both from one light source, so it will need to be > 2' above the tabletop, making it relatively far from the smaller case.

Combined, those will require you to go with significantly more wattage. Personally, I recommend you consider lighting them individually.

You might be able to get away with a 19 watt Cree Floodlight for each, and that would give you the option of raising or lowering them indivually to achieve the intensity you need.

If 19 watts is sufficient for one case, I'm assuming 45 watts is sufficient for two. What about this one, which powers two lights and is height adjustable?

Assuming the data given is correct, that little lamp looks like a gem.

Yes, please DO keep us updated. I saw these, and almost purchased. Having Ray chime in with the adequate lighting part makes me also curious.

Speaking of which... I have a six pack of these purchased for a crystal cabinet display. Really like them. Would y'all tell me if suitable for using for orchid display?

60 lumens each isn't much. Maybe fine for highlighting things in a display, but certainly not for a grow light.

Quick question: I've mentioned before on this forum that I'm super cautious about sun exposure (skin cancer runs in the family). I see with the grow light I linked to includes UV light. Specifically, this is what the description says:
Red light (610-720nm) can Promote blooming, fruiting and increase yield ;
Blue light (400-520nm) can promote photosynthesis; And can enhance the activities of the chloroplast, which are necessary for healthy leaves.
IR (720-800nm)can promote plant cell growth and germination;
UV(380-400nm): Sterilization,disinfection and pest control.The seeds can be improved by long irradiating the seeds.Short ultraviolet rays can control over growth of plants.

UVA is 320-400nm. Should I be concerned here?
