LED lights for Wardian Case?

Remember, light intensity falls off as the square as the distance from the source. In other words, very rapidly. Unless you plan on sitting for hours directly under your grow light (unlikely unless you are VERY small) there will be zero effect on living spaces from the UV of these lights.

Roberta, I would never contradict you, and I have no science to back this up... But, my eye Dr. told me to wear sunglasses around my lights. That being said, eyes are different from skin and perhaps the OP will not be looking up into their lights, as I am.

Remember, in this case we're talking about a very small area, two table-top Wardian cases with light just above them. I am suspecting that your lighted area is a lot larger (given the size and number of your plants) - and that you fit under it - and spend a fair amount of time there.

Good point. It is VERY bright here. Still I wouldn't look right into any of them.

UV photons of the appropriate wavelength/energy may cause DNA damage in a probabilistic manner. Most people have DNA repair mechanisms that repair most damage, so very small exposures through grow lights like these present a very tiny increased risk of skin cancer for most people.

However, if skin cancer runs in your family, there is a chance your DNA protective proteins or DNA repair mechanisms may not function as well as normal. Any extra UV exposure will increase the risk of skin cancer in anybody, but apparently moreso in your family. In this situation I would avoid all exposure to UV, as your doctor suggested. Turn off those lights when you need to work around the plants. UVA is not blocked as easily as UVB, so transparent screening may not be enough.

Thanks for the information ES, Roberta and dolly. I think that I'm going to buy a similar fixture and purchase similar bulbs that don't have UV light. That being said, I wonder if this feature is always specified? I don't believe a majority of LED lights have UV radiation.
