Very small LED or CFL grow light?

I'm going off to college in the fall, and I'd like to take some aspect of the orchid-growing hobby with me, as it's great for calming my nerves and I have a feeling my nerves will need calming very frequently.

Trouble is, I'm assuming the windowsill lighting will suck, so I'll need to bring artificial light. Additional trouble is, the rules about what electrical devices I can bring are very restrictive, due to old wiring in the buildings and a fire marshal who bans anything (excluding essentials like coffee pots and laptops) that could possibly have any tiny potential of causing a fire. I have to get anything not on the approved list approved via Email, so I'm trying to find something they'll approve. I've already sent a couple of asks about relatively small LED fixtures, but I was informed that both were somehow fire hazards.

Therefore, I'm looking for either a palm-sized LED light fixture, or a CFL bulb that I could put into one of those little desk lamp setups. If I can find something suitable, I'd really like to have a tiny (square foot or so) Hydrolon 'living wall' covered in mini orchids, but I don't have any particular species in mind. I'd just like tiny orchids, preferably ones with adorable mini pseudobulbs and/or a growth habit that makes it look like a shrunken version of a larger orchid.


TL;DR, anyone know of a very small LED setup or a CFL bulb that can meet the lighting requirements of at least shade-tolerant mini orchids?

LEDS draw the last amount of power of about anything you plug in.

I had an east-facing dorm room in San Francisco, in the fog belt. I was able to grow and bloom lots of minis, from multiple genera, in a 10-gallon / 38 liter aquarium in natural light. Wait to choose your orchids until you get your room. It might have great light.

Check out Amazon. They have small desk size LED lights. Or buy one from IKEA and switch the bulbs out if need be. ES is right you are assuming the worst. Hope for the best, be ready for the worst.

This is essentially a desk lamp. You can get the same thing in a non-Hydrofarm version. If a 27 watt lamp is too much for the electric system then the building is not suitable for human habitation. Though I have to say, if you can't even have a laptop in your dorm it is hard to imagine this school offers a worthwhile educational opportunity.

I ordered the little LED light below to hang over my Bulbophyllum/Dracula tanks as the area became pretty dark when I shut off one of the nearby T5HO fluorescent lights for the summer. It is a little LED clip light. It should arrive today with the two day shipping.

@Paph, sorry, original post might have been a bit unclear. Laptops, phones, tablets, and coffee pots are allowed, but I think mostly because there would be outrage and unproductivity otherwise.

I hope they permit electric fragrance evaporators. It's barbaric not to be hit in the face with peach poutpourri when you walk into a place.
