I have five plants from the Oncidium alliance. A cattleya, two brassavola and a tolumnia that I have slightly shaded by other plants. I have bloomed the oncidiums. The others are young plants still.

In winter, I have all my plants in the basement under T5 except some Phals and Paphs in bloom. (Who needs blooms in the basement? &#128512

Actually you can grow everything under T5s.

I was going to say, I grow under T8s, and while I haven't tried any cattleya alliance plants, most of my orchids seem to grow and bloom just fine under them.

I grow a lot of phrags, paphs, phals, dendrobiums, and oncidium alliance plants under T8s, year round with no shortage of blooms. I've even got some vanda alliance stuff, but nothing that needs full sun, and nothing that I've had long enough that I can confidently say I've bloomed it under lights.

Considering T5s are brighter, I'm certain you can get away with almost anything. Keep in mind though that some plants are better suited for growing under overhead lights than others. Tall plants with lots of leaves spread out along the stem are hard to get appropriate light to (top leaves can get burned, lower leaves might not get enough). Then there are lots of "crawlers" -- plants with rambling growth habits and long stolons between growths take up too much floor space.

You can grow anything under pretty much any type of light - if you have enough wattage and manage the distance to the plants well.

When I first started growing, I grew & bloomed vandaceous -plants under T12 shop lights and incandescent bulbs - 50/50 wattage wise.
