I thought things like high pressure sodium light is something that can be quite far away from the plants while still giving enough light.
The dowside is that it generates too much heat and it is expensive. well, at least for me, it is.

LEDs are, at most, less than twice as efficient (for photosynthesis) as linear fluorescent lamps and that is only if you are using deep red LEDs in a very well designed fixture. The stuff that is on the market, for the most part I doubt if they are any more efficient than fluorescent. And 100 watts of LED generates as much heat as 100 watts of fluorescent.
