An August Update!
Well, August has been a great month, more so the last week!!! I've got some new orchids as well as modified my closet, so I thought I would post an update!
The major thing I did in my closet today was add a new rack and hang several potted phals off of it and the older one. This made a considerable amount of room down on the eggcrate.

Here is the older one with mounts and smaller phal seedlings.

And here is the new one with three larger ones.

I also got the biggest surprise EVER on the 17th!!!! Without my knowing, my three closest orchid friends (Call_Me_Bob, Mira-Claude, and Medelia) put some money together and got me several Phals as a birthday present from Patrick!!! They should have arrived on the 15th, but there was an error with Canada Post, and the plants were late.
Here is a stuartiana var. nobilis I got from the Canadian friends out of their own collection.

A three crowned KS Happy Eagle with a spike and a coming bud.

A HUGE Vio Vio with a spike and small bud.

Phal. Tzu Chaing Chrisna and Meir's Penang Princess 'Rubicon'.

And Cindy Li (Marie's Delight x gigantea), and a present from Patrick himself, Sogo Kaiulani!

more space = more orchids !!!
I like your set-up. Plants grown under lights always seem to have perfect foliage.
K S Happy Eagle is one of my favourites and hopefully one of these days is going to be a proud daddy ( pollen parent x2 ) in my collection.

Cody, What GREAT friends you have to give you such nice presents! Your are one lucky guy!
The set-up looks great and everything looks so healthy, good growing!
As a side note, with the Meirs Penang Princess, Peter told me that if it is grown in higher light it will produce keikis instead of blooms. Does yours have a clonal name or is it a seedling? Here's a link to my pic of the two together.

Thanks! Yes, it is Meirs Penang Princess 'Rubicon'!! I am actually glad you asked, as the clonal name was buried in the pot, so I didn't think it had one, nor did I look for it.

Ooo, you can't make a comment like that and not tell us the details!!! Do you have any pictures of your K S Happy Eagle? Who were the pod parents? I am quite happy to find another person interested in breeding phals!!!

well its been an interesting 6 months on the pollination front.
I attempted about 30+ phal crosses - this was during, before and after I was educating myself on ploidy issues and the consequences of an "infertile" ploidy. I have had capsules fail after 4 months ! I even had a capsule that naturally dehisced after 5 months and didn't contain a single seed !
I have 3 capsules currently growing at the lab and another 7 developing. I don't want to say which just yet as its bad luck and I may just have to kill somebody to keep the secret safe.
And I have learnt that orchids act uniquely when pollinated. Some lose all other flowers within a few days, some just carry on blooming, some fall within 24 hours ( BAAAD ploidy ), some take a week to fall, some when inviable cause the whole spike to turn yellow....and so on. I started keeping notes so that I don't make the same mistakes next year.
Don't ask me where I am going to keep all these flasks and seedlings when I get them from the lab

Great set up. I like your rack idea. I am building a new growing area so thanks for the idea of how to put more plants in the same space.
