SOLARIS LED LIGHTHOOD
Hi guys,
Just curious. Would this type of lighting be good for orchids? Any ideas?

I think the lighting would be suffcient, providing you could dial in the right spectrum for growing plants.
One question to ask yourself, is it really worth it...the cost of these setups is extremely high.

No its not worth it, . Thanks for the repsonce and welcome to the board. Please introduce yourself in the breaking the ice forum.
I ended up getting a power compact light fixture with 2 65watt bulbs at 6500K light temp.

those LED fixtures are going to be the future. currently that fixture is suposed to put out more PAR than a 250 watt metal halide (more to it than just par, i dont know all the details off the top of my head).
in the long run, the LEDs last 10 years (recommended i think) and will loose about 30% light output in this time. the last i looked these fixtures ran at about 1000$?, which would cost us 100$ per year of use (plus electrical). when a metal halide of equal output will use more energy, and require replacement of bulbs every year. in the long run i think it was shown the LED fixture actually cost less than the metal halide it was compared to.
plus you can program the LED to different color temps, and you can have dawn and dusk effects (which is cool).
though in some years to come, i think LEDs will make some major breakthroughs and it might be better to wait for the prices to come down more.
