The advantage for me is the lower heat, power usage, and that I don't have to change bulbs. I also can keep my LEDs up high to help easy watering. Watering doesn't seem like a big deal but when you really start to have a lot to water you want it easy.

Orchids and other plants grow great for me under LEDs and they work for me better.

If you belong to the AOS and get Orchids magazine, in the November 2011 issue, Jerry Fischer of Orchids Limited has a detailed discussion of newer LEDs and I have a shorter companion piece, with a few pictures showing LEDs in my indoor plant room.

I think much depends on whether you have the upfront cash to buy the LEDs to get the longer term electricity savings and whether your growing area has excess or deficient heat. The height over the plants matters if you want to grow plants with taller spikes.

If you are an AOS member I think you can get online access to some back issues but you have to create online access using your member number as I remember. AOS has rights to the articles so we can't post them ourselves. Sorry.
