Am currently growing about 40 hybrid phals under a 430 watts modified HPS (hortilux) lamp 12 hrs/day. I get foot-candle readings from 1400 to 700 depending on plant position on the 4 x 8 table. Growing and flowering is good with MSU fertilizing at 5ml per gallon. But my violacea hybrids at 800 fc smell less than when i bought them from producer (greenhouse growing).
So my question is: anyone noticed that sunlight vs artificial light (and type of artificial light) can modify the intensity of fragrance in phals?
I grow under T5 fluorescents and have never noticed a change due to lighting type, but do notice a difference depending on the time of day and the temperature. My fragrant Phals in general crank up the fragrance around mid morning when things start to warm up and then it declines toward afternoon/evening.

Thxs for your input Suzan. I did 'sniff' them at all hours of the days and I agree with your observation. But still the fragance is less than when i bought them even late morning.
