but I was wondering, has anyone used one of these inside for orchids? I understand there would probably need to be supplemental lighting, but could this work well?? And if so, what lighting would work with it?

While I have not used this type of "GH", I'm sure used in the right spot, it will give lots of humidity and make growing great for you. More importantly, on this board, THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS!!!!! Asking questions and getting educated is never stupid....only the lack thereof is major BRAIN-DEAD

Is it ok to move this to the Greenhouse Gardeining Discussion? I think you would get more responses there

Gwen (gmdiaz) has one that is very similar to the one you show. Check out this recent thread.

http://www.orchidboard.com/community...a-bloom-9.html

Gwen talks about her rack and the type of lighting she uses. You'll have to scroll down a bit on the page that the link takes you to but it's there. I think t5 fluorescents are the way to go with this rack but I'm no lighting expert! I'm thinking of actually getting one so I'm interested to hear people's responses.

I have a similar rack inside my house - the orchids like the air movement it allows because the shelves are open wired. I also can hang my mounted orchids on it. The rack is in a room with south facing windows (opposite wall). I have a light hanging from above - it's a simple, bright light similar to the ones you use to work on house repairs. The light was $5 at Lowe's and the replaceable bulbs are about $3. I found out my orchids like this light because we're currently remodeling. I don't use the plastic covering because humidity in the house is a steady 50-70%. My orchids are all doing great!

Default O.K. so lighting doesn't have to be super expensive?!

I can get full-spectrum fluorescent bulbs at Lowe's, not T5s, but full spectrum ... would that be alright?! There will also be some naturdal daylight as well. I really want to try this, but expensive lighting is just not feasible for me.

Sounds like a good idea. I think full spectrum bulbs would work fine. As you going to add a fan in there for ventilation? That's the only worry I would have about using it with the plastic closed.
I'm getting tempted to convert my identical gh, which sits empty most of the year!
