Thanks all. I can't explain the frustration with the lighting enough... hopefully by this week it will be fixed, but I'm very excited to finally have a large space for my plants. I've gone through 3 or 4 of various "orchidariums" or just spaces for the orchids over the years. This is the nicest, and it looks basically like they are hanging out in space, with the clear front braces. A little metal hardware, but realistically, for a home setup, it has turned out better than I could have hoped for... My parents still have a little utility room which is referred to as the "Orchid closet" because that's where I stashed all my plants during high school! I've come a long way, although the same idea persists...

Now I have just to set up the High pressure watering system and my regular maintenance will be just adjustments, and the s/h plants below. The next step is to mount the sprinklers above the plastic buckets, and have it run for ~5-10 minutes, with holes in the bottom of the buckets so it simulates the glass vase method. I've had such good luck with it, I hate to give it up, but everything is mounted with fishing wire, so it makes me nervous when everything starts to sag...

The Cactus has special meaning, my uncle passed away 3-4 years ago, and that was a cutting from a large cactus of his that he brought back from Arizona. The whole family now has cuttings from it now, mine seems to be "winning" in our comparisons Seems to be doing pretty well. It's about 1200 lumens at that point. 2000-3000 at the tops of the vandas. 400-800 down where the paphs/phals are.

Will keep updated when I get further a long.

blah... yesterday one light wouldn't ignite... figured it was just a bad bulb... this morning, the second (working) bulb broke... by broke, i mean the inner shell slightly ruptured... in some cases, the ceramic metal halide bulbs will blow up if you run them on an electronic (as opposed to a magnetic) ballast. Because the frequency of the electronic ballasts, 20khz or something very high vibrates a hole right through the arc tube. So now I've bought 3 magnetic ballasts, 2 electronic ballasts, and 4 light bulbs, and maybe no lights

Plants will be in the dark unfortunately for the next few days until the replacement bulbs arrive

Well, I got everything working... sort of. got the new bulbs, and have the 40 pound ballast sitting perched on top of the tank, and little 3 foot wires to the ballasts... and that works... Not a perfect world, but it's working.

Pump that was supposed to provide watering leaks out of the head at first attempt hooking it up, that's going back, and got another to try out... it's just the never ending failures!!! So much $$$ down the drain!

Some pics!
