Safest way to attach seedlings to cork

Well, for what it's worth, I did a little more poking around online and decided to use carpenter staples and pressed them in the mount by hand around the seedlings. So far it looks like things will grow well.

And now from the Sphagnum moss users....I use a small layer of long stand moss on the slab, place the plant on top of that. I take Red Heart scrubby yarn to hold it in place.

I used to use fishing line (I fish too), but it is a pain to tie knots with. Now I use floral wire (metal with green lacquer); two twists will secure the wire.

Braided line does require care, but is so much better than mono. I find the best way to tie it is a reef knot. This slips like crazy, but will enable you to tighten the knot snugly. Then you do another half of a reefknot on top, but instead of going 'under and over' once, you do it three times. I wouldn't use that for fishing, but since few orchids fight to get off the mount, it's more than adequate.
