Here is a Nerdy Video I made on this topic. The one I mounted in the Hole of the wood is doing great. I did add another one to this same wood but it did not have a little hole to sit in . That one is not doing that well.

The one in Clay with with large bark is doing awesome too.

TOLUMNIA - HOW TO MOUNT AND WHAT KIND OF CARE?
Default

Good afternoon. I purchased a Tolumnia Ky-elles Dream last year in a pot and in flower. Wheh it had finished flowering I put onto a 10x15x6 cm piece of cork. I attached a 4x4x0.5 cm piece of sphagnum moss to the cork with fine fishing line and the root above the root with the same fishing line. It hangs up high in my shade house all year. I water it 2 to 3 times a week in summer and only once a week in winter. Feed it once a week in summer. It is currently in flower. Hope this helps.

I have one I mounted on a small lava rock. It was largely an experiment, since I thought I'd lose the plant anyway. I had previously managed to rot off all its roots (I do mean all of them), so I secured it with fishing line and added just a bit of Spanish moss around the base.

Now, 6 months later, it has many new roots and growths. The lava rock stays barely damp and the roots have many nooks and crannies to cling to. As a nice bonus, it looks really cool!

Turock, I would love to see a pic of your tolumnia lava rock mount. I would love to do something similar

Sure! Here are some pix, including a closeup of how those roots are snaking through the rock.

I also mounted an oncidium twinkle on a lava rock. It, too, had zero roots when I mounted it. I'd say it's taken well to its new situation!

Really neat. Algae on rocks - are the rocks standing in water, or is it that humid?

Wow! The twinkle REALLY like the lava mount 😳 and so does the tolumnia. Thank you for sharing, this is just great. Another question, how are you watering? Do you leave them in a saucer in water or do you soak or spray them?

Thanks, guys! I think it was a successful experiment.

The rocks were from my back yard, so they developed that green layer in their natural environment. I soaked them overnight to drown any bugs before I used them as orchid mounts. I thought that green layer was baby moss, so I just left it there instead of scrubbing the rocks clean.

My growing area does stay pretty humid - 60-70% most days. But the rocks do not stand in water at all. The porous nature of the lava keeps the rocks very damp. I water these guys by completely submerging them for about 10 minutes every morning, or every other morning. By the end of watering day, the plants' roots are dry, but the rock still feels slightly damp to the touch.

I really like the results, and so do the plants. I'll be looking for more lava rocks for my future miniatures!
