The rocks were from my back yard, so they developed that green layer in their natural environment. I soaked them overnight to drown any bugs before I used them as orchid mounts. I thought that green layer was baby moss, so I just left it there instead of scrubbing the rocks clean.
My growing area does stay pretty humid - 60-70% most days. But the rocks do not stand in water at all. The porous nature of the lava keeps the rocks very damp. I water these guys by completely submerging them for about 10 minutes every morning, or every other morning. By the end of watering day, the plants' roots are dry, but the rock still feels slightly damp to the touch.
I really like the results, and so do the plants. I'll be looking for more lava rocks for my future miniatures!
