OK, Lots to respond to, and lots to take in. This Board is GREAT!

The active compound in asprin is salysillic acid. It's found a lot in nature. Willow, Slippery Elm, you can even relieve the pain of a tooth ache by squashing a ladybug into the problem area!

Other than oils, there are a few other things to look out for. Lots of fruit trees contain cyanide compounds. Sometimes they are in certain tissues and not others. I would have said to avoid apple, but evidently you just need to peel off the bark! Smart Ross! Pom fruits and stone fruits are some that do contain cyanide, but maybe only in seeds or live bark?

I think I see a common thread. Most conifers seem to accommodate orchids. Could it be the pH?

Buddlia? I never would have thought of using this for a mount! I have weaved a crude hanging basket from thinner butterfly bush branches, but it wasn't that sturdy. I'll have to try this!

The primary reason to peel off the bark of most fruit trees is the harboring of rusts and other diseases. It's way easier to peel than to try to cure a problem.

As for most conifers... not sure I agree with that. I can tell you for sure western cedar is OK (I have a Sedira japonica on one right now). But most of the conifers have more chemicals inherent in the wood and bark than most hardwoods. I would opt for hardwoods over softwoods (conifers) any day. Never would I select a "soft" hardwood such as aspen, willow, etc.

Great discussion, but I think I'll stick to asprin for a tooth ache!

Yeah, Ross, I see your point. It sounds like hardwoods win. Pine sap is pretty nasty. But cedar, cypress, and of course, fir bark - all conifers.

I guess I was assuming that all the wood we're speaking about here has been dried and/or aged (ie driftwood).

Doesn't need to be, but even cedar will need to be treated for resins. Fruitwood limbs recently trimmed from the tree can be used by just peeling the bark, leave in sun for a week or so to dry the piece then mount it up.

I think it's acetylsalicylic acid !! I hope you will forgive the correction. I was hit with Hooked on Phonics as a kid. Never have been able to handle phonetic spelling ever since. I don't like texting either.

I need to go take my Prozac and chill. My meth batch is cooking and I have time on my hands. Sorry.

This is an interesting thread, though. It seems to me that cedar would be a poor choice because of the oils. Same reason it makes a good fence. However, I've never considered oak to be oily as someone said....it is heavy though.

Thumbs up

Correct away. That what the board is all about.

Jason, I hope this is helping you - It's helping me. If you are the "floronic man" can't you control plants with your thoughts?
