Need help picking fishing line.

My preference is a fine, monofilament line, and typically I use 8 pounds or lighter. If you wrap the line multiple times you'll greatly reduce the danger of cutting the roots. I've also used Dental Floss but don't like the way it looks.

I personally don't like the monofilament - it can cut the plant, looks funny to me, and I once got a pre-mounted plant from a vendor which was would so tightly and with too many winds that it strangled the poor plant.

I have used plain cotton string, flexy wire with enough moss for padding, and even acrylic yarn. The yarn was a leftover from a knitting project. It happened to be shades of brown-gray and so it sort of blended in with the wood and the sphagnum i use for padding. It's cheap at the craft store and comes in many colors. It does not deteriorate quickly or rot. It dries pretty quickly. By the time a cotton string rots the roots of the plant have stuck to the wood and you no longer need it, just take it off. If using the yarn, you can just easily snip it off in a few places after the roots have established.

No need to run out and buy something special - look around your house for fabric or such to re-use. : -)

Use old chop sticks and bread bag twisty ties to brace a plant or spike.

Pretty much any string/line will do as long as it does not break before roots firmly hold the mount. I have used braided/colored and monofilament/clear fishing line, nylon string, cotton string, zip ties, and a lot of other materials to secure a plant to a mount. They all seem to work, and the plants don't seem to mind.

I used "bell wire," like they use for doorbells. Nice and smooth, easy to work with.

Hello the internet. Whether you use braid or mono, there has to be someone that sells it.

Braid is very useful to have around. a 6 kilo line ie about 122-15 pounds is thin enough to sew with so if you want to put a button on jeans when the riveted stud goes. and you don't want it to pull off, use braid.

You need to be careful with knots as they slip, so I tie i on with a normal double granny knot, then pull the line tight and the knot slips to go snug. Then I do another half granny but with the short end going three times round instead, and that locks it in place. You need to use special scissors, or a sharp knife to cut it.

One final point, careful when you pull on the line, as it is so thin it will cut your fingers.

However, it is also very hard to see on the mount, and I am very happy with it.

That sounds like a fisherman's knot.

Well when I was fishing with braid I just used a surgeon's knot as that was simple and fool proof.

Looking at the definition, what I was using on the mounts was a reef knot. Then when I pulled that tight so it slipped to tight, I would do half of a reef on top, but instead of going under and over, it goes under and over three times.
