Out of curiosity, how durable is that?

I can't say. I know that it is sold for mounts (peeled). In the wild, dead ones last a long time.

It was hard for me to believe someone charged people for it.

You can sell anything. There's always someone will buy.

My mounts grow in my garden. They are very, very large. Enough for more than 10 orchids. As a bonus, the mount can also grow wax apples! This is possibly the best mount ever, it never rots, it's cheap, it's durable, it looks natural, and you can directly strap the orchids on it. No other media necessary.
It was a sapling in 2007. Now it is almost always in bloom, but as long as it rains, it will not produce fruit (the flowers explode into a bunch of stamens).
Oh, and I've heard about mounting them on ice or solid oxygen?

My dad paid some people to come over and do a bunch of yard work a few months ago, so now I have a treasure trove of crape myrtle wood that just needs to be sawed into usable sizes. That's what I put that one Catt on, and as of today, my Den. cucumerinum.

I got two large pieces of cork, which is common around here.
Still waiting for a good opportunity to use them.

I use pretty much anything though I have become quite fond of EcoWeb.
I have a bad habit of dropping mounts - EcoWeb is so lightweight that the plants are never damaged...
Also, it for all intents and purposes, does not biodegrade so I don't have to worry about it breaking down.

I have a couple of Dendrobium loddigesii, and they produced a shedload of rooting tips, so to neaten them up, I cut them all off and wedged them into cracks in the cork with a bit of wet sphag moss. In a year or so the whole surface which is about a metre long and half a metre wide whould be covered with it.

Interesting stuff. I personally prefer branch mounts with moss on, but I can see how that stuff would be useful. It just looks a little unnatural to me, that's all.
