Thanks Oh I know, it's a wonderfully useful plant also. Where I grew up it was extremely common.
Currently checking the UK Laws for gathering, as laws regarding conservation and nature are becoming, necessarily so, more strict. Currently can't find any indication that gathering Hazel is illegal, unless it's on private property and you don't have permission or it's on a nature reserve (as far as I can tell). Yet there may be conditions where the plant must remain untouched, such as if is harbouring Lichen or Moss which is under threat.

Hopefully visiting relatives in a couple of months and may get chance to gather some more Hazel then, as I know the surrounding countryside there is abundant with it. It's also easily accessible and relatively cheap to buy, with plenty of variety and production of nuts - so I may just invest in a few plants for the garden also.

If you do plant it in the garden, plant it somewhere that it cannot spread. It spreads by the root and can take over quickly and it takes a great deal of effort to chop out the roots. If you can make a concrete planter and plant it in this, that would be a great idea.

Thanks for the tip! Will be sure to bear that in mind, and look for a variety that is potentially not so free roaming also.

Make my own concrete planter!? Hmmm... I think that's within the realms of my capabilities and sounds like a fun project
