Really cute, Mandy. Too bad about the roots. Maybe the surface is too smooth for the roots to grab on to.

Does this ring a bell for anyone??

You'll find the answer in MY thread about growing orchids on bone, started two years ago that no one seemed to care about back then! HUMPH!!

I'm wondering whether it might be low humidity that causes the weak root growth.

In the words of the immortal Governor Moonbeam, Jerry Brown, "that was then, now is now."

Thank you Cambriawhat! I had only read a short 2 sentence summary (orchids imported on the skulls of the ancestors) but never the whole story. Absolutely fascinating. I hope to make time to read the rest of the book!
Now, just to test the "brain trust" here--anyone remember the story (I think by HG Wells?) about the carnivorous orchid?

Yes, H.G.Wells wrote "The flowering of the Strange Orchid" [1894] which inspired Arthur C. Clark to write
"The Reluctant Orchid" [1956].
You are dealing with a life long SF addict.
I read both of those stories as a pre or early adolescent, back when SF was not an acceptable form of literature.
In fact, it wasn't considered to be any form of literature.
How times change.

Thank you voyager--I've read both but couldn't remember the names!
Clarke's take had some dark humor and a trademark twist ending, didn't it??
And sci-fi is and always has been most certainly literature (says one addict to another). It was poo-poohed by "serious" writers and critics in the same way that early novels (including Austen's works!) were dismissed....

ROTFL!
Seriously, read the Wells story (or both if you have time) and you'll never look at aerial roots on your orchids in the same way again....
