Moving plant between mounts? Male
Default Moving plant between mounts?

I've recently aquired a Schoenorchis seidenfadenii, which is mounted on a terracotta giraffe (wtf of the day, indeed).
I'd like to transfer it to my drip wall tank.
How do I best proceed to dismount it?
It's somewhat established, with a few roots attached to the terracotta, but most are loose.
It's also in spike, I might add, with blooms opening any month now.

I'll try to get a pic this weekend.

I say, if you still want the blooms then you should let it bloom first and take care of it as normal being mounted on a terracotta giraffe and when it does, or maybe you've had enough of the bloom you can move it to your preferred mount gently removing it from the terracotta or if you don't value the terracotta giraffe why not, break it-for you to get the roots out of it.

Soak it well and gently tease the attached roots off of the existing mount.

It probably stands a better chance in the tank, I'll get the micro chisel and pry it loose very very gently.
Given the recent transport from Germany bud blast isn't entirely improbable anyway.

Thanks!

I agree that soaking it a while beforehand should help make it easier to pry off. The best tool I've used so far to get roots off is a thin plastic plant plant label that I slid under the root. But if you have better tools, great!

Terracotta giraffe... Sounds like a plant coming from Popow?

I have a set of chisels, originally for wood carving, but I've carved plastic, bone, hardened leather and terracotta before, so they ought to work.

The plant is from Schwerter Orchideensucht. It might be a llama, but I like giraffes, so I'll go with that.

Break up the giraffe, leaving the plant attached to a piece. Place that piece in your tank. Once it has finished blooming, soak and pry, then remount.

Apparently it wasn't too stuck to the terracotta anyway, it fell of nearly on its own accord, just one root that needed any prying.
Two plants, each in spike, and the giraffe, now unburdened is happy as Larry.
