Thanks for the helpful tips, everyone. I don't have much experience with mounting, and I'm growing in the house so I probably won't experiment too much. I was just curious.

Years ago my father built my greenhouse benches and shelves using yellow poplar...I was trying to remember what wood it was earlier and couldn't.....the benches are still as solid as the day he put them in, although the greenhouse is in great disrepair.
Thanks for all the tips everyone.
BTW - I was able to purchase a 40" cork bark log - it is a complete round with a crack down one side where it was removed. It has a ton of little nooks and crannies and I have been purchasing a lot of miniatures to do a mass planting for the local museum greenhouse - I will post pics once it has some plants on it.

Unseasoned poplar is very sappy, that's why it's on my 'bad' list. I'm assuming that JKeys is planning to use tree branches and not boards from a lumber store.

Good to know ALToronto.....I have to admit, the wood my Dad used was well aged, so there was no sap to deal with, but I was unaware of fresher poplar being sappy.
Again, I just use Cork Bark as it is lightweight, resistant to rot and naturally provides great little "pockets" to stuff with moss or coco-fiber.
Thanks for all the good input.....things to think about.

I've got a couple of brassavola hybrids in my greenhouse that have been in pieces of grapevine for 5 years since I got them (who knows how long before?), and I see no sign of rotting.
I suppose when they were harvested might play a role in their longevity - winter = little sap = longer life?

I must admit, my info on grape vines is second hand. A person in a reptile store told me that grape vines were great for desert-dwelling lizards, not so good for wet terrariums. So I haven't actually tried them. My living wall mounts tend to never completely dry out, so I stay away from anything that might decompose relatively quickly.

For really moist mounts I wouldn't go with vines neither.
But for me it's free since it grows in my garden and for my mounts that get wet once or twice a day it works fine.
We got OT but I think the question in the title is answered ...

Walnut. Is that just Black Walnut or English Walnut as well? I have an English Walnut tree.
I also have a Chestnut tree (1/4 Asian, 3/4 American) that is battling the American Chestnut Blight. If it loses, I think I know what type of wood I will be using for mounts....

Black walnut is the bad one, I don't know if other walnuts have lesser amounts of the same substance. Nothing grows near a black walnut tree, it actually looks like someone went crazy with an herbicide for at least 1.5 m (5 ft) radius.
